  7.     You know rap has cracked the mainstream when even the most
  8. radical fare hits the top of the pop charts. N.W.A's album
  9. EFIL4ZAGGIN is No. 1 this week on Billboard's pop-album chart
  10. after just two weeks in release. The album (actually NIGGAZ4LIFE
  11. spelled backward) is a compilation of what the group calls
  12. "gangster rap" -- inspired largely by the group's anger with
  13. society. The stuff gets crude, but its quick success shows that
  14. the rappers have enraptured a huge following. "People are hungry
  15. for N.W.A. Nobody can do it as good as we can," says N.W.A
  16. member Dr. Dre. "We're underground reporters. We're just tellin'
  17. the news."
